- Begin by washing your hair with a gentle shampoo, making sure to rinse thoroughly.
- Towel-dry your hair until it's damp, but not dripping wet.
- Part your hair into sections to make it easier to apply the Follicure treatment.
- Apply the Follicure treatment directly to your scalp with the long nozzle, starting at the crown of your head and working your way toward your hairline.
- Gently massage the treatment into your scalp with your fingertips or the included silicone scalp massager for about 1-2 minutes.
- Leave the treatment on your scalp for at least 10-20 minutes to allow it to penetrate the hair follicles fully.
- Rinse your hair thoroughly with warm water and follow up with a conditioner if desired. For best results, use Follicure at least once a week or as directed by your healthcare professional.
- Store the product away from direct sunlight and heat.
IMPORTANT TIPS
- Repeat the application every time you wash your hair for 3-4 weeks. Within this timeframe, you will start to experience positive results as the Zinc Pyrithione controls the Malassezia overgrowth.
- Consistent application of Zinc Pyrithione will result in continuous antimicrobial activity.
- Because yeast, fungi, and bacteria do not develop resistance toward Zinc Pyrithione, you can continue to use Medi-Zinc cleanser regularly even after symptoms have cleared.
- Make sure that the product has good contact with the skin. Lather the areas you would like to treat and keep the product on the skin for at least 10 min, but most preferably 20 min for best results. This will allow the product to penetrate the follicles to reach the Malassezia optimally.
- To keep the Malassezia yeast from returning, ensure you have enough Zinc Pyrithione hanging out in the skin around the problem areas. Do not stop your treatment after all the signs and symptoms have cleared up. Problem areas should be in contact with Zinc Pyrithione at least once per week.
- The FDA has approved Zinc Pyrithione as very safe and effective. There is no harm in continuing to use the Zinc Pyrithione daily. Bacteria and the yeast on your skin will not become resistant to it, so there's no reason to stop using it.
- Always remember the 10 - 20 min. skin contact rule.

FOLLICURE™ SCALP TREATMENT MODE OF ACTION

Anti-Inflammatory:
Anti-inflammatory action reduces irritation- and itchiness on the scalp.

Anti-fungal:
Disrupt the cell membrane of the dandruff-causing Malassezia yeast, which inhibits its growth and reduces its ability to colonize the scalp.

Sebum-regulation:
Sebum is an oily substance produced by the sebaceous glands on the scalp that can contribute to the development of dandruff when it is overproduced.

keratolytic (EXFOLIATING) action:
Exfoliate dead skin cells that accumulate and become trapped in hair follicles, leading to the overgrowth of dandruff causing Malassezia yeast.
ZINC PYRITHIONE MODE OF ACTION
Zinc Pyrithione has broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity: It inhibits and reduces the burden of Dandruff-causing Malassezia on the skin and targets gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and other fungi that cause ringworm, athlete's foot, and jock itch.
Zinc Pyrithione disrupts iron distribution across the yeast wall and effectively starves the yeast of some of the critical processes important in its respiratory function.
Zinc Pyrithione disrupts the yeast's cell membrane, preventing it from proliferating and reproducing. Zinc pyrithione binds to the cell membrane of the yeast and causes damage to its structure, which ultimately leads to cell death.
Zinc pyrithione also interferes with the metabolic processes of the yeast. It disrupts the uptake of essential nutrients and alters the scalp's pH balance, making it more difficult for the yeast to survive and grow.
Zinc Pyrithione penetrates the hair follicle where Malassezia resides and has a unique slow-release ability. It persists in the top layer of skin even after rinsing off the product. Therefore, it imparts long-lasting control and sustained release of anti-yeast coverage and suppression of Malassezia yeast overgrowth.
The yeast, fungi, and bacteria do not develop resistance toward Zinc Pyrithione. Consistent application of Zinc Pyrithione will result in continuous antimicrobial activity.
Inflammation on the scalp contributes to itchiness, redness, and irritation, which are common symptoms of dandruff. Zinc pyrithione reduces inflammation on the scalp, which help to alleviate these symptoms.
Zinc Pyrithione positively affects the immune system by balancing pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines in the body. Studies published in the Journal of Dermatological Science indicate that Zinc Pyrithione increases the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines in human skin cells. These cytokines are known to be involved in the immune response and are important for regulating inflammation and promoting healing.
Studies further indicate that Zinc Pyrithione significantly reduces the pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin-1 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha production. This action boosts the body's natural defenses against the yeast and reduces the severity of dandruff symptoms.
Cytokine production is a complex process that involves a delicate balance between pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines. Too much or too little cytokine production can lead to problems with inflammation and immune function. Zinc Pyrithione contributes to a healthy balance between inflammation and immune function.
Zinc pyrithione also has direct anti-inflammatory effects on the skin by reducing the production of certain enzymes that contribute to inflammation.
Zinc pyrithione regulates sebum production on the scalp. Sebum is an oily substance produced by the sebaceous glands on the scalp that can contribute to inflammation and the development of dandruff and other scalp conditions. When sebum production is regulated, it can help to reduce inflammation and improve the overall health of the scalp.
Sebum production is controlled by a complex interplay of hormones, enzymes, and other factors. Zinc pyrithione helps regulate sebum production by targeting the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, which converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone linked to increased sebum production.
By inhibiting 5-alpha-reductase activity, zinc pyrithione helps reduce the levels of DHT in the scalp, reducing sebum production. This helps prevent the buildup of oil and debris on the scalp, which can lead to dandruff, acne, and other conditions.
These clinical trials and studies demonstrate the efficacy of zinc pyrithione in the management of dandruff, itchy scalp, and seborrheic dermatitis. By targeting Malassezia yeast and promoting a healthy scalp environment, zinc pyrithione can be a valuable component in the treatment of these common scalp conditions.

SALICYLIC ACID MODE OF ACTION
Salicylic acid exfoliates dead skin cells from the scalp's surface, reducing flakes and dandruff buildup.
Dandruff is often caused by an accumulation of dead skin cells on the scalp, which can become trapped in hair follicles and create an environment favorable for Malassezia's growth. This fungus is associated with dandruff.
Salicylic acid helps break down the bonds between dead skin cells, making removing them from the scalp easier. This helps reduce the buildup on the scalp, which in turn can reduce the amount of dandruff.
Salicylic acid also has anti-inflammatory properties, which can help to soothe an irritated scalp and reduce itching and flaking. By reducing inflammation and promoting healthy skin renewal, salicylic acid helps create an environment less conducive to Malassezia's growth.
Overall, salicylic acid is an effective treatment for dandruff because it helps to exfoliate dead skin cells, reduce inflammation, and promote healthy skin renewal.
These clinical trials and studies provide evidence for the efficacy of salicylic acid in managing dandruff, itchy scalp, and seborrheic dermatitis. Salicylic acid's keratolytic properties enable it to break down dead skin cells, exfoliate the scalp, and reduce flaking and itching, making it a valuable treatment option for these common scalp conditions.

Follicure™ will not fade colored hair.
Follow these tips to minimize the risk of color fading in any circumstance:
- Use cool or lukewarm water to wash your hair. Hot water can strip the hair of its natural oils and open the hair cuticle, leading to faster color fading.
- Follow up with a conditioner. This can help to seal the hair cuticle, lock in color, and maintain the hair's moisture balance.
- Protect your hair from sun exposure, as UV rays can contribute to color fading. Wear a hat when spending time outdoors, or use a hair product with built-in UV protection.
The length of time that Follicure™ needs to be in contact with the skin to be effective can vary depending on the severity of the condition being treated. In general, it is recommended to leave Follicure™ on the skin for a period of time to allow the active ingredients to work. We recommend leaving the Follicure™ on the scalp for 10-20 minutes before rinsing.
It is important to follow the instructions provided to achieve the best results. Leaving the product on the skin for too short a period of time may not allow the active ingredient to penetrate the skin.
Dandruff is a common scalp condition that is characterized by the shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp in the form of white flakes. The pathophysiology of dandruff is not fully understood. Still, it is believed to involve a combination of factors, including an overgrowth of Malassezia yeast on the scalp, an overproduction of sebum, and an abnormal immune response.
Zinc pyrithione and salicylic acid are two active ingredients used to treat dandruff.
Zinc pyrithione works by slowing down the growth of Malassezia yeast on the scalp. This yeast is a normal part of the skin's microbiome, but it can cause inflammation and flaking when it overgrows.
Zinc pyrithione disrupts the yeast's cell membranes, which reduces its ability to reproduce and thrive on the scalp. This helps to reduce the severity of dandruff symptoms, including flaking and itching.
Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid that exfoliates the scalp and removes dead skin cells. It penetrates the skin's pores and dissolves the intercellular glue holding dead skin cells together. This makes it easier for the dead skin cells to be shed from the scalp and reduces the buildup of flakes that contribute to dandruff symptoms.
Together, Zinc Pyrithione and Salicylic acid can be an effective treatment for dandruff by reducing the overgrowth of yeast on the scalp and removing the buildup of dead skin cells.
By addressing the underlying causes of dandruff, these ingredients can help to alleviate symptoms and promote a healthier scalp.
Zinc pyrithione exhibits its antifungal activity against yeast, such as Malassezia, by interfering with various cellular processes. While the exact mechanism of action is not fully understood, research suggests that zinc pyrithione affects the yeast cells in several ways:
- Disruption of membrane transport: Zinc pyrithione can interfere with the transport of essential ions (such as potassium and sodium) across the cell membrane of the yeast. This disruption leads to an imbalance in the ion concentrations, affecting the yeast's ability to maintain proper cellular functions and eventually causing cell death.
- Inhibition of metalloenzymes: Zinc pyrithione can inhibit the activity of metalloenzymes, which are enzymes that require metal ions for their function. Many cellular processes, such as DNA replication, RNA synthesis, and protein synthesis, rely on these enzymes. By inhibiting their activity, zinc pyrithione disrupts the normal functioning of the yeast cell.
- Generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS): Zinc pyrithione can increase the production of reactive oxygen species within the yeast cells. These highly reactive molecules can cause oxidative stress, leading to damage to cellular components like proteins, lipids, and DNA. The accumulation of this damage can eventually result in cell death.
- Impairment of trace element homeostasis: Zinc pyrithione may also affect the balance of essential trace elements within the yeast cell. By disrupting the homeostasis of these elements, the compound can impair various cellular processes that rely on them, leading to cell dysfunction and death.
Through these combined effects, Zinc pyrithione effectively inhibits the growth of yeast like Malassezia, reducing their presence on the scalp and alleviating dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis symptoms.
