Phathi Katurah Hlongwane

It is an honor to introduce our first Female Executive, Phathi Katurah Hlongwane.

She is the architect and founder of the creative brand Inkaturah. Inkaturah is a luxury, contemporary African brand handcrafting statement jewelry pieces.

Each piece narrates a different story that celebrates and expresses the character of the unique individuals who wear them.

Phathi’s vision for her brand is to grow further into the fashion industry, and you will soon find statement clothing pieces part of the Inkaturah-family. 

About Phathi Katurah Hlongwane

I am creative at heart and I'm interested in a variety of design fields.

I studied architecture and I feel it has been a great foundation for me to explore my creative talents.

I enjoy taking on new hobbies, traveling, reading, and watching design shows. I am working toward a more holistic lifestyle and as such I am trying to focus on a balanced well-being which includes mental wellness, exercise, and good food.

What is the Vision of Inkaturah

I have recently had rejuvenated energy towards building my brand.

I would like to see it grow globally and over the next few years, I plan to attend Expos abroad so that I can get wholesale clients and reach a bigger footprint.

I am also very keen to create exhibition-style pieces and see where that could lead me in the world of costume design. I will introduce clothing soon, and hopefully, I can start mentoring within the next year.

Where did you find the inspiration?

I was working for an African fashion brand, and I found myself needing an extra income. I began making simple earrings as a way to supplement my income, and soon, I found myself creating more intricate designs.

The designs evolved as I began to experiment with varied materials, increase my skillset and also listen to client requests.

The designs sometimes tell a story, and sometimes they are simply beautiful compositions.

What makes your brand different?

I believe the merge between my architectural background and fascination with fashion make my brand unique.

What gives you confidence as the owner of a business?

My confidence over the years has grown, and I credit that partly to the response I get from clients and the fashion community.

When I see a complete stranger wearing one of my pieces, I feel so much joy. I have also worked with stylists, photographers, makeup artists, designers, and models who, over the years, have requested to use my pieces for their portfolios.

Knowing that there are so many varied individuals that appreciate my work gives me the confidence to keep creating. I also strongly believe in taking breaks when necessary, and I am trying to be more disciplined about that.
