REDNESS
You are on the DermExcel Aging regimen and experience redness.
First, we would like to reassure you that redness is completely normal and to be expected. The redness is most likely caused by chemical exfoliators that form part of your treatment regimen. Glycolic acid is the main exfoliator in your treatment plan.
The primary function of Glycolic acid is to exfoliate the skin by dissolving the “glue” that holds dead skin cells together. With nothing forcing these cells to hang out together, they can finally slough off your skin. As the superficial, damaged layer of skin gives way to the newer layer underneath, your skin gets smoother and brighter. The wrinkles look smaller. Dark spots slowly fade away. Your whole complexion subtly glows.
Glycolic acid has a list of benefits including:
- Increase Collagen production
- Pigmentation treatment
- Hydration enhancement
- Renewal Facial Cleanser
- Glycolic gel
- Chemical Peel Spray
When starting on a skin treatment plan that contains active ingredients, especially in the form of chemical exfoliators, initial redness may occur because of the following functions and benefits of these ingredients:
- Stimulation of lymphatic drainage for internal cleansing. This form of skin detoxification removes toxins and other unhealthy debris.
- Stimulation of oxygen-rich blood to feed and nourish the skin's surface. This boosts cellular health to reveal glowy, radiant skin. Increased blood flow to the surface of your skin also promotes collagen production.
- You are increasing your skin cell turnover rate. This means that it promotes new, healthy cells at the surface and breaks down and removes the dead, dry, or dying ones. The result is soft skin, smooth texture, and a more uniform appearance.
No management or intervention is needed if your redness is not associated with discomfort, stinging, or burning - continue with your current treatment plan.
peeling
You are on the DermExcel Aging regimen and experience flaking or peeling
First, we would like to reassure you that peeling / flaking skin is completely normal and to be expected. The peeling is most likely caused by chemical exfoliators that form part of your treatment regimen. Glycolic acid is the main exfoliator in your treatment plan.

When starting on a skin treatment plan that contains active ingredients, especially in the form of chemical exfoliators, periodic peeling and flaking skin will occur because of the functions and mechanisms of actions explained above. Salicylic acid disrupts cellular junctions to exfoliate dead skin cells. Glycolic acid exfoliates the skin by dissolving the “glue” that holds dead skin cells together. With nothing forcing these cells to hang out together, they can finally slough off your skin.
If you don't experience sensitivity in the form of stinging / burning skin:
- Use your facial cleanser morning and evening.
- Apply cleanser on dry skin. You may slightly damp your fingers to help with spreading.
- If you apply your cleanser on dry skin, you are able to circulate the cleanser over your eyes without burning or stinging.
- Only apply over your eyes if your skin is resistant enough. This may only be possible after a few months of using this product.
- Keep the cleanser on for 2 minutes or longer.
- Remove the cleanser with a clean, lukewarm face cloth or microfibre sponge. This will also help to remove excess makeup and loose peeling skin.
If you experience sensitivity in the form of stinging / burning skin with your flaking / peeling skin:
CLEANSER:
Renewal Facial Cleanser
- Use your cleanser only in the evening. Only rinse your face with clean water in the morning.
- Apply cleanser on wet face. This will help to neutralise the cleanser to decrease its potency. Do not apply the cleanser over your eyes.
- Keep the cleanser on for 1 minute or shorter.
- Wipe your face with a lukewarm face cloth in the morning. This will help to remove this loose dead skin.
CHEMICAL EXFOLIATOR
Glycolic gel / Chemical peel spray
- Use only once per week, when your skin becomes more tolerant you can increase the frequency of use.
- If your skin is very red and sensitive, discontinue use for a few days until the sensitivity subsides.
- Start using it again only once per week.
STINGING / BURNING
You are on the DermExcel Aging regimen and experience stinging / burning.
Chemical exfoliator active ingredients and retinoids might sting, and in that particular case, they're supposed to. Tingling and stinging from these types of active ingredients are to be expected and even beneficial if it is for a short period.
The stinging is a result of immediate inflammation and then skin peeling. This reaction encourages new collagen growth and cellular renewal. However, there is a delicate balance. Skincare products should not cause prolonged burning and irritation. If your stinging and burning sensation lasts longer than 1 minute and your skin feels sensitive and uncomfortable, you probably over-exfoliate your skin and should hit the pause button, or at least the slow-motion button.

Glycolic acid-based products that may form part of your treatment:
- Renewal Facial Cleanser
- Glycolic gel
- Chemical Peel Spray
The stinging is mainly because of the chemical exfoliators that form part of your treatment regimen.
In order for these ingredients to be effective, the product should have an acidic pH. Acidic pH levels cause the skin to experience a stinging / burning sensation.
If you experience burning, stinging, and discomfort - over-exfoliating may be the culprit.
You may have overdone the exfoliating products, your skin is not used to active ingredients, or sensitive skin needs to ease into these active ingredients. Whatever the reason, with the proper tender loving care, precautions and support, you may definitely benefit from the superior benefits, efficacy, and results accompanying medical-grade active ingredients.
The below guidelines will decrease the potency of the chemical exfoliating active ingredients to support your skin in easing into your new treatment plan or to support your skin during periods of barrier impairment.
